This workshop is for photographers and artists who want to make images that reveal their imagination, passion, and vision. Focus on accessing ideas, planning visual projects and learning essential power tools in Photoshop. With projected demonstrations and inspiration from a collection of artists’ images, review creative ways to tell stories, interpret dreams, execute assignments, and explore personal invention through digital art. Composition, symbolism, emotion, and message are themes addressed as a group.

Using Photoshop’s powerful layers, masks, selection and adjustment tools, learn how to prepare elements, compose the frame, merge images, create depth and alter pictorial perception. Bring along any materials and digital projects you want to share, discuss, explore, or refine. Participants receive a CD and content booklet to increase learning beyond the workshop.

This workshop is designed for intermediate and advanced level participants familiar with Photoshop’s basic tools, layers, and selection methods.

David Julian holds a BFA from Pratt Institute, and is a widely published photographer, illustrator, and mixed-media artist. Over the past 23 years, he has created art for nationwide clients of every genre as well as international galleries and private collectors. Using traditional and digital processes interchangeably, he pushes the creative edge in his work. His studies in the sciences influence his artistic expression, blending the subtle beauty of the natural world with his vivid imagination. Adobe Photoshop is the universal image-editing program for photographers and designers. Through hands-on instruction, get a solid foundation in the language, procedures, and tools needed to create, edit, and manipulate digital images. Areas covered include use and management of layers, color and tonal correction, camera RAW format, selection tools, image manipulation tools, compositing images, channels and masks, and creative applications of Photoshop.

This course is designed for those with no prior experience in Photoshop. A working knowledge of Photoshop is a prerequisite for all intermediate and advanced Photoshop workshops.

David Ulrich is a photographer and writer whose work combines traditional photography with digital imaging. Ulrich has taught digital applications for Pacific Imaging Center, Kodak’s Center for Creative Imaging, New York University, and others. For 15 years, he was an associate professor and served as the chair of the photography department at The Art Institute of Boston. He is a core faculty member of Pacific New Media and is now the chair of the Visual Arts Department at Cornish College in Seattle.

An introduction to Digital Design, using leading professional tools from Adobe’s Creative Suite: a complete design environment that combines InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and more. Adobe InDesign CS3 software combines extraordinary production power and creative freedom to take page design to a new level. Explore the program’s tools, palettes, preferences, and compatible file formats. Discover the tools and features of the vector-based powerhouse, Adobe Illustrator CS3, to create dynamic graphics for print or web. And with Adobe Photoshop CS3, explore techniques to create original images or modify photos using a full assortment of painting, drawing, and retouching tools. Get useful tips and techniques, developed from many years of work on professional projects. Through step-by-step demonstrations and a variety of hands-on projects, gain an understanding of this software suite in the digital design process.

Dan Doerner has a background in art, photography, film, and music. He is the digital technologist at RJ Muna Pictures, a top San Francisco photography and art studio. He has been working with Macs since 1987 and has completed hundreds of projects for ad agencies, design firms, publications, and multimedia producers.
