A Survey of Digital Imagery in Hawaii 2009

New Pacific Media Juried Exhibition

Are you a creative image-maker who uses digital technology?

Pacific New Media is sponsoring a juried exhibition designed to provide a snapshot of the “state of the art” of digital media in Hawaii.

Hawaii residents, amateurs and professionals are welcome to submit images.

Selected images are exhibited at Canon Gallery
March 2, 2009 - March 31, 2009.

Requirements: You must have taken the image digitally; i.e., cell phone, digital camera, or scanner. Image must have been created within the past two years and not previously exhibited.

Photographers living in the state of Hawaii who are 18 and older are eligible. Work must be original. Selected work must be printed for exhibition.

She co-authored the very popular book WordPress 2 Visual QuickStart Guide, and has written extensively about making websites, using the Internet, and using Macintosh computers. She recently created a new blog called Paperchains whose purpose is to help reduce the amount of wasted paper in the world and thereby reduce fuel use, pollution and other negative impacts. Jordan regularly uses Twitter, and dips in to Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Flickr. She helped organize the successful Webstock 06 and 08 Web Conferences.

Workshop with Photojournalist Eli Reed

Spend the day working with renowned photographer Eli Reed. Reed discusses how a photographer observes and uses the immediate environment to create successful photographs. Topics include different ways of getting close to the subject matter, deciding on and choosing the correct lens/focal length, using light to help point the way, and learning to allow the imagination to add the special point of view that makes a photograph unique. Reed brings to the classroom broad experience in photography, journalism, and film.

Prerequisites: Please bring your camera and a way to download your images to a computer.

Lunch will be provided.

Olympus will have cameras and lenses you can borrow.  [No charge but credit card and ID required for deposit. Bring your own capture card for loaned camera.]

A photographer with the elite Magnum Agency since 1983, Eli Reed has worked for a broad spectrum of clients including Life, National Geographic, Save the Children, and Doctors Without Borders. He has also worked extensively in the film industry for some of Hollywood’s top directors including John Singleton, Spike Lee, and Robert Altman and has gained a reputation as one of the best photographers in the industry. Reed teaches photojournalism at the University of Texas and is in the process of directing several films. He has published several influential books, exhibited work internationally, and lectured and taught extensively.
